2009 ACC Conference Tournament Schedule

Men's Basketball Championship Week Begins Wednesday

North Carolina, Wake Forest, Duke, and Florida St. each receive a bye in the 2009 ACC Conference Tournament. The remaining eight will play on Wednesday.

The Tar Heels look to be the clear favorite after defeating Duke for the second time in a month on Sunday. Wake Forest is coming alive again after faltering for many weeks and should push the UNC to the limit.

The ACC hopes to grab six spots for the NCAA tournament and possibly more depending on how bubble teams, Boston College, Miami, Maryland, and Virginia Tech fare in the four-day, loser-go-home tournament.

2009 ACC Conference Tournament

UNC has only lost three games this season, twice in a single week in January against Boston College and Wake Forest. Most recently, they collapsed late in the second half to a fired-up Maryland team. Still, they will gain a number one seed in the NCAA tournament regardless of what occurs in the ACC tournament. Should they lose, they may relinquish the number overall seed to Pittsburgh, but they should still play in Greensboro in the first and second rounds.

Wake Forest, once the number one ranked team in the country faltered and dropped out of the top-ten but have since regained their composure. They will be UNC’s stiffest challenge for the tournament crown.

Two potential second round match-ups to keep an eye on:

  • Duke vs. Boston College
  • Maryland vs. Wake Forest

Boston College, having defeated UNC and lost Harvard, in the same week, can play with most teams and could be a sleeper to watch.

Maryland has been inconsistent of late but they can play with anyone in the land on any day. Guard Greivis Vasquez can hit clutch shots and out-dueled UNC star forward Tyler Hansbrough last month.
